Appalling Votes of Glenn Grothman

During the 2007-2008 legislative session, out of 33 Wisconsin state Senators, Glenn Grothman was one of:

– one state senator who rated dead last in the “report card” posted July 28 by the Wisconsin Professional Police Association regarding legislator’s performance with regards to bills tracked by WPPA. Grothman, alone, received the worst ranking of all Wisconsin state senators from the Wisconsin Professional Police Association.

– two state senators who had the very worst voting record on all Senate bills endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters. Grothman was one of only three senators who voted against reducing unnecessary mercury toxic hazards (SB346), and one of three who voted against keeping toxic electronic waste out of landfills (SB397). Grothman was one of only six senators who voted against the Strong Great Lakes Compact (SB523) in the regular session. He supported weakening amendments and delaying procedures until changing his final vote at the last minute in the Special Session, when passage became inevitable. Grothman voted against the Wisconsin Conservation Congress which urged appointment of the DNR Secretary by the Natural Resources Board, rather than the Governor (SB 15).

– three senators who tied for the worst lifetime voting record on bills important to Wisconsin working families, as tracked by the AFL-CIO. Grothman cast the only vote in the entire senate against a bill agreed upon by the Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council to increase the maximum benefit by just eight dollars in 2009 (after no increase in 2008). The only vote that was cast by Grothman in the last session that was endorsed by the Wisconsin Labor Council was on a bill that passed unanimously. – five state senate “Public Enemies” of good governance reform bills as rated by the non-partisan Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. For example, Grothman voted against the Impartial Justice Bill (SB171) to neutralize the corrupting influence of campaign contributions and anonymous phony issue ads on the Supreme Court, and to accomplish election reform urged unanimously by all members of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

– six state senators who refused repeated requests from the Wisconsin Alliance for Womens Health and from four out of five Wisconsin citizens, when he voted against the Compassionate Care for Victims of Rape Bill (SB377), and also voted against requiring pharmacists to fill safe, legal birth control prescriptions (SB232).

– seven senators who were rated the lowest by the Wisconsin Association of School Boards

– eight state senators who voted against requiring health insurance policies to cover care for autism (SB 178).

– nine state senators who tied for the worst voting record on bills tracked by the Wisconsin Federation of Teachers.

– Grothman sponsors a Constitutional Amendment that would require a government-issued photo ID to be able to vote (AJR17), and which would place unnecessary difficulties and obstacles in the way of thousands of Wisconsin citizens who already experience severe difficulty and inconvenience in exercising their right to vote. Virtually all allegations of voter fraud that this Constitutional Amendment would supposedly prevent have been exposed as without substance. There has been no voter fraud that would be prevented by this extreme remedy. There is only the false allegation of a problem, that continues to be promoted and repeated for partisan political advantage. It’s OK to pursue partisan political advantage, but it is definitely not OK to do that by making voting more difficult or inconvenient for many thousands of legitimate voters.

– Grothman introduced a Constitutional Amendment that would abolish affirmative action meant to counter effects of past and continuing discrimination against women and people of color (SJR96). But his proposal would do nothing to end the more prevalent affirmative action that gives preference to people from wealthy or well-connected families to prestigious universities, associations, and positions leading to power, influence, and great wealth.

– Grothman opposes the Wisconsin Health Security Act, Healthy Wisconsin, and any other real effort to fix the health care crisis and significantly control the escalating costs. Grothman voted against Healthy Wisconsin (SB 562), which would save Wisconsin citizens and businesses more than a billion dollars annually over current health care costs, and provide all citizens with the same health care we now provide him.

Voters in the 20th Senate District have never before had a choice in a general election when Glenn Grothman seeks to “represent” us in Madison. If citizens here become fully aware of how Glenn Grothman actually voted, and with “a choice for a change” in the general election, we wouldn’t let him go back to misrepresent us again.
