Appalling Votes of Glenn Grothman

Filed under: Environment,Glenn Grothman,Politics & elections,Wisconsin legislature — Hearts & Minds @ 1:22 pm

See how Glenn Grothman, one of 33 Wisconsin State Senators, voted during the 2007-2008 legislative session. This is just a short page, a concise quick read, and packed with links to further information if and when you need it.

During the 2007-2008 legislative session, out of 33 Wisconsin state Senators, Glenn Grothman was one of:

one state senator who rated dead last in the “report card” posted July 28 by the Wisconsin Professional Police Association regarding legislator’s performance with regards to bills tracked by WPPA. Grothman, alone, received the worst ranking of all Wisconsin state senators from the Wisconsin Professional Police Association.

two state senators who had the very worst voting record on all Senate bills endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters. Grothman was one of only three senators who voted against reducing unnecessary mercury toxic hazards (SB346), and one of three who voted against keeping toxic electronic waste out of landfills (SB397). Grothman was one of only six senators who voted against the Strong Great Lakes Compact (SB523) in the regular session. He supported weakening amendments and delaying procedures until changing his final vote at the last minute in the Special Session, when passage became inevitable. Grothman voted against the Wisconsin Conservation Congress which urged appointment of the DNR Secretary by the Natural Resources Board, rather than the Governor (SB 15).

three senators who tied for the worst lifetime voting record on bills important to Wisconsin working families, as tracked by the AFL-CIO. Grothman cast the only vote in the entire senate against a bill agreed upon by the Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council to increase the maximum benefit by just eight dollars in 2009 (after no increase in 2008). The only vote that was cast by Grothman in the last session that was endorsed by the Wisconsin Labor Council was on a bill that passed unanimously. See “Voting Records” of all state senators and members of the assembly.

five state senate Public Enemies” of good governance reform bills as rated by the non-partisan Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. For example, Grothman voted against the Impartial Justice Bill (SB171) to neutralize the corrupting influence of campaign contributions and anonymous phony issue ads on the Supreme Court, and to accomplish election reform urged unanimously by all members of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

six state senators who refused repeated requests from the Wisconsin Alliance for Womens Health and from four out of five Wisconsin citizens, when he voted against the Compassionate Care for Victims of Rape Bill (SB377), and also voted against requiring pharmacists to fill safe, legal birth control prescriptions (SB232).

seven senators who were rated the lowest by the Wisconsin Association of School Boards

eight state senators who voted against requiring health insurance policies to cover care for autism (SB 178).

nine state senators who tied for the worst voting record on bills tracked by the Wisconsin Federation of Teachers.

– Grothman sponsors a Constitutional Amendment that would require a government-issued photo ID to be able to vote (AJR17), and which would place unnecessary difficulties and obstacles in the way of thousands of Wisconsin citizens who already experience severe difficulty and inconvenience in exercising their right to vote. Virtually all allegations of voter fraud that this Constitutional Amendment would supposedly prevent have been exposed as without substance. There has been no voter fraud that would be prevented by this extreme remedy. There is only the false allegation of a problem, that continues to be promoted and repeated for partisan political advantage. It’s OK to pursue partisan political advantage, but it is definitely not OK to do that by making voting more difficult or inconvenient for many thousands of legitimate voters.

– Grothman introduced a Constitutional Amendment that would abolish affirmative action meant to counter effects of past and continuing discrimination against women and people of color (SJR96). But his proposal would do nothing to end the more prevalent affirmative action that gives preference to people from wealthy or well-connected families to prestigious universities, associations, and positions leading to power, influence, and great wealth.

– Grothman opposes the Wisconsin Health Security Act, Healthy Wisconsin, and any other real effort to fix the health care crisis and significantly control the escalating costs. You can see here what Grothman thinks about the health care crisis. Grothman voted against Healthy Wisconsin (SB 562), which would save Wisconsin citizens and businesses more than a billion dollars annually over current health care costs, and provide all citizens with the same health care we now provide him.

Voters in the 20th Senate District have never before had a choice in a general election when Glenn Grothman seeks to “represent” us in Madison. If citizens here become fully aware of how Glenn Grothman actually voted, and with “a choice for a change” in the general election, we wouldn’t let him go back to misrepresent us again.

VOTE for CLYDE WINTER (Independent)-A Choice for a Change for Wisconsin State Senate District 20

  1. Absolutely superb reporting Clyde. And this guy doesn’t have a challenger yet? Whether a Democrat or a new Republican challenger, this guy has got to go.

That he voted against clean judicial campaigns gives you an idea how he will vote should the assembly ever allow a campaign reform bill to cover the state legislature (which they are not likely to do).

P.S. Actually, I misspoke Clyde. Greg Dombrow (I) from Germantown has registered to run against Grothman.

  2. The senate is full of idiots anyway… most of those things he voted against died when actual Republicans had to deal with them in the Assembly.

Damn… you guys forgot free tampons for the poor… didn’t he vote against that too?

Oh, and forgot to say hi to Jack… hey Jack. Having you comment on this is like the pot calling the kettle black. You are crazed and pointing fingers at a fellow-traveler.

Grothman doesn’t fit your mold very well. He votes the way he thinks. It is unpredictable, unclear and confused, but it is not for sale.

I would be happy if he just thought things through. He may vote with the last voice he hears in his head, but there is no campaign cash attached to it.

  4. We need a competent candidate to oppose Grothman, because we need competent representation in the legislature. Let us know, Jack, if and when such a candidate surfaces from this elite, highly educated, thoughtful district.

It appears that “Try Again” considers Grothman an “actual Republican” – a breed which he feels is a very rare bird in the Senate, even though there are 15 who call themselves Republicans there. I don’t mind “unpredictable” state Senators. But “unclear and confused” ones have no legitimate business being there. It might help if Grothman “just thought things through” rather than “vote with the last voice he hears in his head”. Try again, “Try Again”.

As for Grothman being “not for sale”, it might be purely a coincidence, completely unrelated to their lobbying and massive political “contributions” and expenditures, that Grothman is one of only five Wisconsin state Senators who are rated 100 percent by Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce. I have not asserted that Senator Grothman is corrupt or “on the take”. And without hard evidence, no one should even insinuate that such corruption has touched a particular individual. But the system of election campaigning and lobbying (which Grothman vigorously defends) lends itself to abhorrent legalized bribery and corruption. And the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming (buttressed by the repeated legal prosecutions of officials, at all levels, for ethics and elections violations of laws that themselves currently ignore the worst forms of anti-democratic corruption) that government is NOT of, by, and for the people – government is for sale, government has become a quid pro quo business deal. While evidence sufficient to bring criminal indictments against given individuals may be unobtainable (or, as may well be the case with Grothman and others, even non-existent), and while both major political parties may be untouchable, though certainly culpable and guilty, any defense of the current stinky system, and any roadblocks erected to block needed and effective reforms must be vigorously refuted, and the motives must be treated as highly suspect.

A true champion fighting to free citizens from economic burdens and government shackles (unlike Grothman) would forget about grandstanding, red herring distractions, and demagoguery, and instead heed and lead the signals about the health care crisis in cost, about the true cost of corruption in government, about election fraud and election fairness, and about injustice in our justice system. Your “hero” doesn’t deserve hero status with 99 percent of his constituents, “Dohnal”.

  5. Just having an R after your name doesn’t make you a fiscal conservative. Look at what happened under the Thompson Tenure with Republicans running the show. Spending galore, almost all on special interest giveaways, put the budget deficit where it is. And *now* they don’t want an increase in taxes to pay back all the IOUs.

  6. I encourage all you liberal handwringers to devote all your time, energy and treasure on a campaign to oust Grothman.

    Good luck with that.

  7. Grothman was one of those free-market Republicans that voted to eliminate the free market in wine distribution. I see.

  9. Nice work as usual Clyde.

The great joy, or terror, of Glenn-watching is that even Stephen King could never have made up most of this stuff.

Ah Fraley (see comment 6) I don’t see anyone wringing their hands. We all know where we live. It’s just that there is a certain amount of exasperation that attends watching Glenn and his fellow travelers send Wisconsin’s jobs overseas, cut services for working people, cut the educational spending that constitutes the engine of economic development, cut the protection of our eco-system from industries more interested in profit (as they should be) than in the long term health of our children and, a bit more philosophically perhaps, running amok with the idea that his constituents are consumers rather than citizens.

I’m not a consumer. I’m a citizen. America is not a business. America is a country. We aren’t an economy. We *have* an economy.

Anyway, I love the idea that Glenn is a supposed to be “real” Republican. He’s not. He’s a neo-con Moonie. I’m trying to imagine how the same people who have already disowned the politics of both Lincoln and Goldwater (!) could possibly be considered “real” Republicans.

I’m with John Dean on this one: neo-conservatism isn’t a political point of view, it’s a self-destructive psychopathology. Defending Glenn, a guy who votes against emergency contraception for rape victims, puts you in the same rubber room. Get help, before Glenn makes sure that your private insurance won’t pay for it anymore.

    His insurance, of course, will.

  10. There are important new and historically unique developments in Ozaukee, Washington, and Waukesha counties. Besides the unprecedented challenge to Grothman in the coming November general election, Greg Dombro (a Vietnam combat veteran running as an Independent) will oppose Pat Strachota in the 58th Assembly District (West Bend, Jackson, and Slinger in Washington County), Perry Duman (running as a Democrat) will oppose Mark Gottlieb for the 60th Assembly District (Port Washington, Cedarburg, Grafton, and Saukville in Ozaukee County), Sheldon Wasserman will oppose Alberta Darling for the 8th Senate District (which includes Mequon-Thiensville) and there will be a contested election for the soon to be vacated Assembly District 24 (Germantown, Menomonee Falls, and Richfield in Washington and Waukesha counties).
